Nazareth Hospital Celebrates World Autism Day

World Autism Awareness Day is observed annually on April 2nd. This day aims to increase understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) around the world. It provides an opportunity to promote autism awareness, acceptance and inclusion in society. Mr. Kaushal Kishor the speech therapist at Nazareth Hospital and Darshana Special School at Prayagraj exhorted the nurses on the above topic in the Nursing School auditorium. Speaking on the topic, Mr. Kishor elaborated on behavioral symptoms of autism that include difficulty with social interactions, such as limited eye contact, challenges in understanding nonverbal cues, and difficulty forming friendships. Individuals may exhibit repetitive behaviors, like hand-flapping or rocking, and may adhere rigidly to routines, becoming distressed by changes. Sensory sensitivities, ranging from hypersensitivity to certain stimuli to insensitivity, are common. Communication difficulties, such as delayed speech or repetitive language, are prevalent. Restricted interests often manifest as intense focus on specific topics or objects. These symptoms vary in severity and combination, emphasizing the diverse nature of autism spectrum disorder and the importance of tailored support and intervention. He threw light on the line of treatment of these autistic children. Further, he advised the nurses to keep the children away from gadgets in order to save them from virtual autism. The nurses had various questions on the topic which were clearly explained by the resource person. Rev. Fr. Vipin D’Souza proposed a vote of thanks and Mr. Akhil Pattnaik, the additional administrator gave a token of love to Mr. Kaushal.
